Pedro L. Alonso (1).png

Full Professor of Global Health, University of Barcelona

Former Director, WHO Global Malaria Programme

He is a physician, epidemiologist and internationally recognised expert in malaria and global health, with over 30 years of experience in research and a career dedicated to improving disease control and elimination strategies in vulnerable populations. His work has played an important role in the clinical development and evaluation of malaria vaccines.

Full Professor of Genetics and Immunoparasitology, Universidad Nacional de Colombia

She is an experienced researcher specializing in genetics and parasitology, with a career focused on hematology and integrative taxonomy of blood parasites in wildlife. She also founded and serves as curator of the GERPH Biological Collection, the first collection of wildlife haemoparasites in Colombia.

TanjaHimmel.jpg

Postdoctoral Researcher in Avian Haemosporidian Parasitology and Infection Biology, Medical University of Vienna and University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna

She is an early-career researcher studying avian haemosporidian parasites in wild birds with a focus on tissue-stage development, within-host parasite distribution, and infection-associated pathology. She also taught avian haemosporidian tissue stages and histology at the latest WIMANET Summer School.

PhilippeChriste2_edited.jpg

Full Professor of Biology and Faculty Member in the Institute for Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine, Temple University

He is an experienced researcher in malaria evolution and parasite population genetics, whose work explores how ecology and natural selection shape the genetic diversity, biogeography and host adaptation of human and non-human malaria parasites. He will also lecture in the pre-conference Molecular Phylogenetic Method course.

Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow in Evolutionary Ecology and Infection Biology, Lund University

He is an early-career researcher in evolutionary ecology and infection biology, working on host–symbiont associations, microbial communities and avian host–parasite interactions, with a focus on gut microbes and immune responses during malaria infections. He also plays an active role in the scientific community through his involvement as a WIMANET working group leader.

Associate Professor in Ecology and Evolution, Université de Lausanne

He is an experienced researcher in ecology, conservation biology and evolutionary biology, whose research spans host–parasite interactions, parasite transmission and the ecology of bat ectoparasites and avian haemosporidian parasites.

Invited speaker of the IV International Symposium of the Wildlife Diseases Research Network

He is an experienced researcher specialising in microbiota biology and single-cell technologies, with a particular focus on gut microbial communities and bacteria–host interactions in animals of agricultural and medical relevance, including wild rodents. His work has contributed to the development of advanced approaches for high-throughput bacterial profiling, and his research combining automated imaging and artificial intelligence was recognised with the 2023 RIKEN EIHO Award.

Doctor of Engineering, Professor at Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences
